Proprietary Interfaces

Board ID Scanning required

  • In todays SMT-lines with inhomogeneous equipment, information has to be regenerated again and again.
  • Sanning of barcodes, fiducials, ink spots and other data is needed again and again.
  • This causes high investment costs and high effort on product change.
  • Yet an ongoing threat for information loss and significant throughput loss persists.

Challenges: The Current Situation versus The Hermes Standard
The Hermes Standard: More value from the line through smooth communication

With The Hermes Standard: Full Process data availability, Maximum Line throughput & Traceability

Board ID Scanning required

  • The Hermes Standard establishes a method for Board tracking over the entire line without the necessity to use multiple barcode readers or barcode readers at all. This will allow e.g. to collect process data and traceability data per board / batch without the necessity to read barcodes again and again.

How The Hermes Standard overcomes the SMEMA weaknesses
SMEMA can't meet the challenge

Why SMEMA can’t meet the challenge?
Existing SMEMA concentrates mainly on the board flow management from A to B.
Even concentrating on this task, many aspects are not covered sufficiently within the standard such as:

  • Separation between availability announcements and conveyor synchronization not given
  • Feedback about the transport success not given
  • Additional data associated to the handover not existing e.g. width, length, thickness of the board
  • Machine-to-machine synchronization regarding board handling properties not given e.g. conveying speed
  • Extensibility beyond limitations like the pin count of the SMEMA socket not given e.g. additional data such as the
board ID, batch ID or barcode cannot be carried
What can The Hermes Standard provide ?
The Hermes Standard can cope with all above mentioned topics and is extensible for future purposes.

How The Hermes Standard overcomes the SMEMA weaknesses
SMEMA can't meet the challenge

  • Multiple cable types. At least 4 different types of cables:
    • Plug-pin
    • Plug-socket
    • Plug-plug
    • Pin-pin
  • SMEMA is expensive
  • Users need to check each machine to connect for getting the right cable
  • Additional information needs to be modulated on the hardware signals
  • There is no general system to keep additional information through several machines
